Skip permit cost: what UK councils charge to put a skip on the road
Updated
A builders skip on the road needs the highway authority's permission under section 139 of the Highways Act 1980, and the fee is the council's own: from £33 a week in North Northamptonshire to £143.33 for each 28 days in North Lanarkshire, across the nine councils whose pages we read on 28 October 2026. A skip on your own drive needs no permit.
The law
"A builders' skip shall not be deposited on a highway without the permission of the highway authority for the highway" (Highways Act 1980, section 139). The skip firm normally applies, and many councils only grant permits to registered skip operators.
